By-laws of Deerpark Middle School NJHS
ARTICLE I: NAME AND PURPOSE
Section 1. The name of this organization shall be the Deerpark Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society of Secondary Schools (NJHS).
Section 2. The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage citizenship among students of DeerparkMiddle School.
Section 3. The NJHS shall be under the sponsorship and supervision of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
ARTICLE II: THE PRINCIPAL
Section 1. The principal shall have the right to approve all activities and decisions of the chapter.
Section 2. The principal shall appoint a chapter adviser, who may serve consecutive terms.
Section 3. The principal shall be a part of the local school district appeal process or dismissal cases.
ARTICLE III: THE CHAPTER ADVISER
Section 1. The chapter adviser shall be responsible for the supervision of the chapter and act as liaison between faculty, administration, students, and community.
Section 2. The chapter adviser shall maintain files on membership, chapter history, activities, and financial transactions. The chapter adviser shall send the annual activity report to the national office.
Section 3. The chapter adviser shall review each member for fulfillment of standards and obligations.
Section 4. The chapter adviser shall help the chapter officers understand and carry out their duties.
ARTICLE IV: FACULTY COUNCIL
Section 1. The faculty council shall consist of five faculty members. No principal or assistant principal may be included on the faculty council.
Section 2. The term of the faculty council shall be one year. Members may be appointed to consecutive terms.
Section 3. The chapter adviser shall be an ex-officio, nonvoting, additional member of the faculty council.
Section 4. The faculty council shall meet at least once a year to consider selection of members and continuation of members.
ARTICLE V: MEMBERSHIP
Section 1. Selection for membership is by a faculty council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, service, and citizenship. Thereafter, members have the responsibility to maintain all standards.
Section 2. The faculty council shall reserve the right to award honorary membership to school officials, principals, teachers, NJHS advisers, or adults in recognition of outstanding service to the school.
Section 3. Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony.
Section 4. An active member of the NJHS who transfers from this school will be given a letter indicating the status of his/her membership and signed by the Principal. A National Junior Honor Society member who transfers to DeerparkMiddle School and brings a letter from the principal or chapter adviser of the former school shall be accepted automatically as a member. However, transfer members must meet this chapter's standards within one semester in order to retain membership.
Section 5. Violation of the law or school regulations can result in dismissal of a member. These violations include, but are not limited to: stealing; destruction of property; cheating; truancy; or possession, selling, or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at school or school-related activities. Members who exhibit flagrant or consistent violation of school rules will be subject to immediate termination. Members who resign or are dismissed are never again eligible for membership or its benefits.
ARTICLE VI: SELECTION OF MEMBERS
Section 1. To be eligible for membership the candidate must be an eighth grade student. In the case of transferring from another school, the student may bring a letter of recommendation from the previous school principal pursuant to the candidate's selection.
Section 2. Candidates must have a cumulative scholastic average of at least 93.5 from their 7th grade year.
Section 3. Upon meeting the grade level and GPA standard requirements, the faculty council will review comments submitted by each of the candidate's teachers, past and present. Teachers will be asked to rate students on leadership, citizenship, character, and service. Those who achieve outstanding rankings will be considered for membership. Teacher rankings are considered confidential and will not be made public. Any student who has had ISS in their seventh grade or eighth grade will be excluded from membership. All decisions regarding eligibility made by the Faculty Council are final.
Section 4. Candidates must complete an essay once they have been notified that they are eligible for membership. Failure to submit this form by the designated time shall automatically disqualify the student from induction. Such compliance shall indicate a candidate's interest in becoming a member of the NJHS.
Section 5. The student shall comprehend that membership in the NJHS is an honor bestowed upon a student based on qualifications and not something for which he makes application.
ARTICLE VIII: CHAPTER OFFICERS
Section 1. The officers of this chapter shall be a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, project director, and reporter. The president shall preside at meetings, and the vice-president shall fill the position in his absence. The secretary shall keep the minutes of the meetings, and the treasurer shall oversee the collection of money and maintain records of financial transactions.
Section 2. Officers shall be eighth-graders, and their election shall take place during the first regular meeting.
ARTICLE IX: MEETINGS
Section 1. The chapter shall have regular meetings during the school year according to school regulations.
Section 2. All members are expected to remain active by participating in service projects and attending in all meetings.
ARTICLE XI: ACTIVITIES
Section 1. The chapter shall determine one or more service projects for each year.
Section 2. All members shall regularly participate in these projects.
Section 3. These projects shall fulfill a need within the school or community and have the support of the administration and the faculty.
Section 4. Each member shall have the responsibility of choosing and participating in a service project that is within his or her particular talents and interests. This is in addition to the chapter projects to which all shall contribute.
ARTICLE XII: OFFICIAL INSIGNIA
Section 1. This organization shall have an official emblem selected by the National council.
Section 2. The distribution of the emblem and the rules for its use shall be under the exclusive control of the National Council.
Section 3. Each active member shall be entitled to wear this emblem.
Section 4. Any member who resigns or is dismissed shall return to the chapter adviser the emblem and other items bearing the official insignia, regardless of whether such articles have been obtained as gifts, awards, or personal purchases. Furthermore, each member agrees that acceptance of items bearing the official insignia will follow the same compliance of rules.
Section 5. The motto of the National Junior Honor Society shall be "Light is the symbol of truth.
Section 6. The official colors of the National Junior Honor Society shall be blue and white.

Annual dues are $5.00 This money is used to cover the induction expenses, projects, and national dues. It is due upon application.
